Quicklisten:

In this episode, we talk about non-x86 architecture in the datacenter.

Just the Tip

  • Paden’s Fable reminds you to full-disk encrypt your portable devices wherever/whenever possible and make sure your device’s runtime is also password-protected.
    • Also don’t just hit the power button to turn your laptop off probably.

Notes

Starts at 19m11s.

I was drinking water. Paden was drinking water. Jthan was drinking water.

  • Alternative Hardware Architectures in the Datacenter
    • A big discussion point about e.g. ARM is the power (as in, electricity) consumption.
    • We talk about RISC, MIPS (which probably already exists in your datacenter in some iteration), and ARM a LOT.
    • ARM is not end-all, be-all. Reduced electricity consumption, sure, but its performance is inferior.
    • Jthan thinks ARM would be good for firewall appliances, but… we have MIPS for that. ARM is overkill for a network appliance.
    • I also mention FPGA, which is analogous to what RISC was originally created for.
    • We also mention POWER/PPC.
    • Jthan mentions Graviton and Graviton Challenge.

15 Clams

In this segment, Jthan shares with you a little slice of life. The title is a reference to this video. (2m16s in)

Starts at 55m08s.

Jthan rants about a 2-hour T-Mobile sales call. (He called them.)
